IVF in Iran, similar to other parts of the world, is one of the principal methods used to assist fertility and overcome a range of fertility issues. Infertility treatment in Iran is conducted in different clinics. Best IVF centers in Iran include Mom, Royan, Ibn Sina, and Rouyesh.
This article discusses the meaning, indications, and stages of IVF in Iran.
In vitro fertilization (IVF)
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is the most effective form of assisted reproductive technology, which consists of a complex series of procedures that involves the fertilization of eggs with sperm in the laboratory and transferring the embryo to the uterus.
After stimulating the ovaries with injected Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), mature eggs are collected (retrieved) from the mother or egg donor and fertilized in the laboratory with the biological father’s or donated sperm to form the embryo. The embryo or embryos are grown in the laboratory for about five days and then transferred to the biological mother’s or carrier’s uterus in a Pap smear-like procedure. IVF in Iran is performed under the supervision of a team of specialists from beginning to end and assists the couples with conceiving their own children.
When is In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) needed?
As mentioned, IVF is most intended to help fertility and treat infertility, as well as, preventing genetic disorders. However, your fertility specialist may suggest trying less-invasive treatment options before going through an IVF procedure. In Vitro Fertilization is also recommended in women over the age of forty to enhance their chances of fertility.
IVF in Iran and other parts of the world is advised if you or your partner suffers from:
Fallopian tube injury or blockage:
The fallopian tube is the route by which eggs travel to the uterus.
Ovulation ailments:
In ovarian disorders, the number of healthy eggs available for fertilization may be insufficient or infrequent.
Severe Endometriosis:
Endometriosis, which means the growth of tissue similar to the lining of the uterus in external areas such as the fallopian tubes, can also affect fertility.
Uterine fibroids:
Fibroids are benign tumors that may interfere with the implantation of a fertilized egg. They are common in women in their 30s and 40s.
Previous tubal sterilization or removal:
Tubal ligation is a sterilization procedure performed on people to permanently prevent them from getting pregnant. However, performing IVF in Iran in reputable clinics will help you to conceive again.
Impaired sperm production or function:
If sperm is low in concentration, poor in mobility, or malformed, it may not be able to fertilize the egg. IVF is the answer in this case.
Unexplained infertility:
When the root cause of a couple’s infertility is not clear, IVF can also help.
A genetic disorder:
In the case of a specific genetic disorder being detected in one of the couples, IVF is performed to ensure the child’s health, and the embryos that don’t contain identified problems will transfer to the uterus.
Fertility preservation before undergoing damaging procedures like chemotherapy:
Cancer treatments can damage fertility. harvesting healthy eggs before starting treatment and freezing them for future use is an option. The frozen egg then is transferred to the uterus after fertilization.
IVF in Iran: step by step
The process of IVF in Iran takes about 6 weeks and includes the following steps:
Pre-treatment phase
In this phase, the couple meets with a fertility specialist. They will review your medical history, all prior investigations, and treatment. You should also perform some biochemical tests, ultrasound, and other procedures as prescribed.
Step 2: treatment phase
At this stage, FSH is administered through a diabetic-style pen. This hormone stimulates your follicles to produce more eggs to harvest. the greater the number of collected eggs is, the chance of fertilization is higher.
During this period, you undergo routine blood tests and ultrasounds to determine when the eggs are ready to be collected.
Step 3: Trigger injection
Once the optimum number and size of eggs are achieved, you will receive a single injection of hCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin). This hormone acts as the natural Luteinizing Hormone and causes the eggs to release from the ovaries (instigates ovulation.) Two to three days later it’s time to collect the eggs.
Step 4: Egg and sperm collection
In an outpatient surgery, a procedure like a Pap smear, the eggs are retrieved under ultrasound guidance. You will stay in the clinic for a few hours and will need someone to drive you home afterward. The eggs collected in the laboratory and a fresh semen (sperm) sample, provided by your partner will be used to make the fetus.
Step 5: Egg fertilization & Embryo development
The eggs are taken to the laboratory, where they are placed on a dish next to the sperm where fertilization occurs. However, if the sperm does not have the proper movement needed to naturally fertilize the eggs, or are few in number, a highly experienced embryologist injects a single sperm into the egg under a very delicate microscopic control. This method which is referred to as ICSI has a lower chance of fertilization compared to IVF in Iran.
The fertilized egg/eggs are transferred to an incubator, which provides a temperature similar to that of the human body. It takes a few days for the embryo/embryos to grow. In the next stage, the embryo will be transferred to the uterus.
Step 6: Embryo transfer
In the sixth stage of IVF in Iran, the fetus is transferred to the uterus. This is also similar to a Pap smear procedure and is performed under local anesthesia. for embryo transfer a very fine catheter is passed through the cervix. If there are more embryos, they can be frozen and kept for later use.
Step 7: Pregnancy test
A pregnancy test is done two weeks after the embryo transfer even if your period has commenced (this can be normal to have a period despite being pregnant). Once the pregnancy is confirmed, ultrasound and routine tests are scheduled until the end of the pregnancy.
